I Am Not My Hair

I was once told that a woman’s beauty is her hair, well to all who think such an insane thing I say:

“Good hair means curls and wavesIndia Arie I am not my hair
Bad hair means you look like a slave,
At the turn of the century
Its time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off
Like a South African beauty,
Or get in on lock
Like Bob Marley,
You can rock it straight
Like Oprah Winfrey
It’s not what’s on your head
It’s what’s underneath (ohh yess)….”

I Am Not My Hair” (Featuring Akon) is a conscious song by India Arie on herMiscellaneousalbum. It’s tells a tale of her different hair stories, and what different textures of hair mean to society, case in point:

“Good hair means curls and waves
Bad hair means you look like a slave”

A prime example of this would be the film “Django Unchained”, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Django Unchained Broomhilda

Kerry Washington’s character Broomhilda is a slave, and in accordance to this her hair is thick with curls. However it should be noted that Washington in reality often rock’s straight hair-sometimes her own sometimes brought. Therefore as a black woman you start to make an association between hair and beauty. However if you believe that you are in fact not your hair, you’ll be capable of dismissing this stereotype. Adjusting your own mental state will ensure that your hair isn’t oppressed by current fads in this Western world.
